When this model hit the market, it was the first of its kind to be built solely for the North American market. It came powered with a 3.8L V6 engine. This could produce 291 horsepower, and 262 lb-ft of torque. Being that this is the only engine option, you’ll find similar fuel economy across all trims. This engine has an EPA rating of 22 MPG combined, when paired with the almost 19-gallon gas tank, you can go upwards of 400 miles.
The Telluride comes with four drive modes. These are Smart, Eco, Sport, and Comfort. There’s also a few other modes, these being Snow, and AWD lock modes. These had to be put on to the vehicle as options. The Telluride comes with a tow rating with 5,000-pounds. If you’re a handyman with a family, this is the choice for you.
There’s 4 trims to be aware of when looking at used models. These are the LX, S, EX, and SX. While a 3-seat bench is standard for the second row, some models can be found with Captain's chairs for the second row. This cuts into the capacity, but adds even more comfort.
No matter which model you find, you’ll find either leatherette or leather trimmed seating. Unlike other three-row SUVs, the Telluride comes with Driver Talk, this is an intercom system that allows you to communicate with the third row easily.
During 2020 and 2021, the model saw its highest safety rating achieved. This was Top Safety Pick, and Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS. This made it one of the safest vehicles on the market. It has continued to hold these ratings, even on to the new models.
For 2022, the Telluride saw a refresh. This came with some new tech, such as a 12.3-inch instrument panel, and if you're lucky, you’ll find a model that was equipped with a smart power liftgate with auto-close functionality.
If you want something a bit more rugged, the 2023 model brought the X-Line, and X-Pro trims. Both of these trims are AWD, with the X-Line having a slightly higher ride height at .4-inches. A new tow mode is also added, as well as 20-inch wheels. While the X-Line does have a different build, it is the “less intense” trim, as noted by Car and Driver in their review of the trims.
If you find an X-Pro, it’ll come with a 110-volt outlet in the cargo area, 18-inch All-Terrain tires, and has a higher towing capacity at 5500-pounds. Thanks to these new trims, it takes the lineup from being just another family vehicle to one that will be a handyman’s dream, while looking good doing it.
